Frosh Welcome Letter
On the first day in kindergarten, you were the only kid whose mom didn't show because she was working.
Everyone else was bawling into maternal knees, but you weren't crying because your dad was with you and you
knew he wasn't going to desert you.
Until 15 minutes later, a stranger is holding you and your dad's disappeared.
In grade nine, you didn't notice that seniors had separated into distinct groups, and so when you got lost you inadvertently asked the tough crew for directions. Later, you'll wonder at your blind courage, but just then you were skinny, pimpled, late for English 1D, and too afraid to skimp on help.
Now there's a diploma with your name spelled correctly - for once - buried somewhere among all the
junk on your table.
And you're here. At Queen's.
Congratulations on having been accepted into one of the most prestigious universities in Canada. You're
in for a few years that will change your life.
Worrying, isn't it? What have you let yourself in for?
Not a coffee drinker? That'll change. Cramming can do things to you.
A self-confessed neat freak? Have you met your room-mate?
Afraid of speaking in public? Wait till you join QUMSA.
Never fasted before? You're going to, just to enjoy our home-cooked Iftars all the more.
Not the do-gooder-volunteering type? Have you met QUMSA's Community Outreach program?
Are you prepared for this? Have I sufficiently scared you? Okily, there is hope.
*clears throat*
That hope is us. QUMSA. QU's MSA. Muslimness to the fullest.
We've got BBQs, tours, a whole host of things lined up. But our responsibilities extend further than this one week. We will be available for your assistance throughout the year.
